How do you think mobile technology will change people’s relationship to government access and services? Will having government services and elected officials “on the go” make us more (or less) democratic as a society?

Mobile technology can make it easier to connect to services. Instead of spotting a problem and waiting to look up a phone number and make a call, pulling up the app and reporting it in the moment can make things easier for citizens. On the flip side, the department can get inundated with complaints or requests, potentially stemming from a few (or one) very concerned citizen. It sets up what could be a case of the person with the most complaints getting a response (or eventually getting blocked, though then it becomes a question of legality), especially if something goes viral on twitter or some other platform. Overall I think the technology can lead to greater transparency, which is always good for a democratic society, though society must be aware of the danger of the tyranny of the majority as elected officials struggle to respond to loud voices yelling into the electronic void.

Lesson 8 Part 2 Challenge

Searching for popular audiobook titles in OverDrive and OneClick are relatively easy. I searched several titles, Before the Fall, The Girl on the Train, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Court of Thorns and Roses and found that the title was exclusively available on one platform or the other. This was not something that I had realized before given my limited use of eAudiobooks, though it makes perfect sense from a publishing and distribution lens. If a patron is exclusively wanting audiobooks and not tied to a particular title I would suggest starting with OneClick. OverDrive has a great number of titles, but the search process can be muddy and frustrating if the patron isn't careful with restricting their search or checking icons for the audiobook headphones.

Lesson 6 Part 2 Challenge

It's very easy to post comments or repost someone else's comments without thinking through the consequences. It can reflect poorly on the person posting, especially if you don't know where the quote or comments originated. This is to say nothing of the fact that tone cannot easily be conveyed in text form. What is written sarcastically can be read as fact, giving the reader a mistaken impression of the poster's intent.

Social media does make it easier for far-flung people to connect with one another. I like to check in every once in a while to see where people are and what they are doing.

The Keyword Challenge is surprisingly difficult, particularly getting the alternate words and the little effect words correct. It was fairly easy to pull out the as is keywords and the stop words that were unnecessary to use. I did manage to get a 100%, but only after practicing a few times and receiving 80-90%. This is a good exercise for teaching students how search engines work.

Lesson 3 Part 2 Challenge

Parents and teachers who are looking for new titles to read aloud to their young children would find the 2x2 LibGuide a good place to start. If they aren't concerned about only new titles, they can take advantage of the backlist dating to 2012. It's a great resource for reader's advisory when the children's librarian is not available.

Many early childhood teachers and parents don't know that the library carries an extensive children's music collection and using the Kids: Children's Music LibGuide can introduce them to this area.

The Little Read Wagon LibGuide is another fantastic resource for early childhood specialists. In addition to listing dates of upcoming SAPL training, resources from the collection are highlighted and pertinent outside organizations are linked.

 The Circulation LibGuide is an amazing resource and answers just about any question that arises when working at the Circulation Desk. It is clearly written and provides answers to questions that new employees often don't even think to ask.

The Marketing LibGuide is helpful for preparing for outreach events and creating publicity at branches and within unique departments. Requesting materials and images is fast and simple.

Opposing Viewpoints + Academic Search Complete + Learning Express A high school student was working on a paper and needed information on prescription drug pricing. After reading a number of articles on Opposing Viewpoints, she wanted even more information about how prescription drugs were made because her sister needed to carry an Epipen in case of emergency. She went onto Academic Search Complete and found peer reviewed articles on drug development that answered some of her questions. A few days later she came back to the library because she decided that she wanted to become a scientist working on drug development. She wanted to start studying for her SATs to could get into a good school, so she started using Learning Express test preparation.

I used mostly basic functions like the Font functions and Paragraph tools to create the flyer. Inserting pictures is simple and the tabs are well organized and clearly labeled. Being able to use the print preview function and have a clear look at the finished product is helpful for making adjustments. Being able to send it as a PDF means that we can more easily share materials with external groups.
